About

What is Henna?

Henna is a form of temporary body art, mainly stemming from South Asian, Middle Eastern, and North African cultures. It’s a paste derived from the leaves of the henna tree, and around 5 millenia ago, when it was discovered, it was mainly used as a cooling agent in these hot regions of the world. Today, it’s used as a form of bodily decoration, usually on the hands and feet, and a way to bond during gatherings. In Indian culture, we use it during significant religious festivals like Eid and Diwali, as well as very intricate patterns for weddings, as we believe it’s associated with positive spirits and good luck, especially for a new bride.

Who Are We?

My name is Nishta Nandakumar, and I’m the founder and creative director of Henna By Nishta.

It all started six years ago, a passion stemming from an expired henna cone during a housewarming event. Three years later, I decided to start my own small business, dedicated to spreading my culture and the beauty of South Asian art and giving back to the community. Over the last three-and-a-half years, I’ve done henna for local events such as Diwali parties, events at the India Center of Westchester and the Indian American Cultural Association of Westchester, various religious festivals, such as Eid and Karwa Chauth, as well as weddings!

Though my mission is to spread the South Asian culture to people who might not be familiar with it, I also greatly believe in the power of giving back to our community. We’ve therefore partnered with Heartsong Inc., a Westchester-based nonprofit that empowers individuals with special needs through creative arts therapy. Many of my profits over the last three years have gone to them!

Here, I'm doing henna for the purpose of  donating my profits to Heartsong!
